It to me sounds like an internal problem. But I would first check to make sure the wiring on the 7-way of your vehicle and trailer doesn't have a short from exposed wire. It almost sounds like the wiring from the 12 volt accessory circuit is shorting out to the output circuit when you hit the brakes which causes a quick application of full braking voltage. view full answer...

I took a look at the owner's manual for your 2022 Volkswagen Atlas and it states, "Never install weight distributing or load equalizing ball mounts. It would seem like a simple fix to just use a sleeve adapter with the Yakima # Y02445 to convert it to a 2 inch hitch but Yakima says that using adapters like this will void the warranty of the rack so we do not endorse that.
