Hey there Don, that's a good question as there's a lot of different tow bars available, and the answer is no, you are not limited to only a Blue Ox tow bar for your 2010 Scion xD using Blue Ox Base Plates # BX3778.
That said, it is easier and I do recommend going with Blue Ox as your first choice because you won't have to use any adapters; so if it were me I would go with the Blue Ox Alpha 2 # BX7380. The Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness # C56136 is a custom fit harness for the 2009 Scion xD which has incandescent tail lights.
