While there is certainly a way to carry bikes or cargo with a 2014 Nissan Maxima a panoramic glass roof, I checked with our rack manufacturers, and there are no options for a roof rack fit. So you do have a couple choices, depending on what you are looking to haul.

In terms of protecting the vehicle finish, both the Rhino-Rack and Thule systems install by using specially designed clips to fit the vehicle and the towers rest on pads. It looks like you are going to be drilling no matter which hitch you use. The Curt hitch, # C11352, attaches more to the frame which is why it requires removal of the heat shields. The hitch itself will act as a heat shield to dissipate heat.

Recently Curt walked back the requirement for the stabilizer strap when using a bike rack with their hitches so the strap wouldn't have to be used when carrying the Thule T2 Pro XTR part # TH23JV that you referenced although it wouldn't be a terrible idea to still use it if you can find a way to.

Most likely there was a short at some point and the # 118175KIT was damaged and now it is behaving in the strange way that you described.
Before you replace it with a # 119178KIT I would recommend that you go over all of the connections to make sure that the problem is not just wires shorting out somewhere.
If the wiring looks good I would recommend you purchase a Trailer Wiring Kit # 119178KIT and replace the unit that is currently in your vehicle.
