For the Thule Elite Van XT, part # TH302043, Thule recommends Dekalin MS 5, SIKA 252 or Terostat MS937 glue. A 2-way tape can accomplish this, however I recommend going with one of the glues.

On a 2 wheel drive vehicle you want to at least have chains on the drive axle. If it's a rear wheel drive vehicle then you would go with the rear axle and vice versa for a front wheel drive vehicle.

Not only would this void your warranty, but there is no guarantee that the rack will be able to support a bike in this way.
