The difference between class III and class II hitches is the 2 inch opening compared to the 1-1/4 inch receiver tube opening. There are far more accessories and bike racks that fit a 2 inch hitch than the smaller 1-1/4 inch and because the shank inserted in the receiver is larger they are more stable and can support more weight.
