From what you describe, it sounds like your trailer originally had hydraulic brakes that have been replaced with electric brakes. At this point, your hydraulic coupler which is also known as a surge coupler is strictly being used as a way to attach the trailer to the trailer ball. This arrangement works just fine as long as a cross bolt has been installed to prevent the coupler from being compressed.
