Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Review of Kenda Trailer Tires and Wheels - Tire with Aluminum Wheel - KE23JR

Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a look at this Kenda Karrier ST175/80R13 radial trailer tire in a load range C, and it's mounted on this 13 inch black mesh aluminum wheel with the 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. Now, this tire wheel assembly is ideal for stock trailers, utility trailers, and even campers. The wheel, we mentioned, it is a Sendel Series T17 aluminum wheel and it's a mesh style design wheel that has a matte black finish to it. The front and even the back of the wheel are all clear coated for protection. Now if you notice, the wheel does not come with a center cap.

If you do want a center cap, we do sell those separate on a website. You do wanna make sure to get a center cap that'll have the same diameter as this pilot hole of the wheel 'cause when you install your center cap, it will go through this pilot hole. The diameter on this pilot hole is 3.19 inches. Now the wheel, the diameter on the wheel is 13 inches. The width on just the wheel is five inches wide.

This wheel does have a bolt pattern of 5 on 4-1/2 inches. And if you wanna measure that on a wheel like this that has an odd number of lugs, what you'll do is pick any hole and then you're gonna measure across to either this hole or to that hole. You just pick either one. But when you measure, it's from the center of the starting hole to the furthest edge of the hole that you measure to. So on this wheel, it'll measure 4-1/2 inches.

So it's a five-lug 4-1/2 inch hole pattern. This wheel does use a lug size of a half inch by 20, and the weight capacity on just the wheel is 1,660 pounds. Now, the tire that's mounted on this wheel, it is a Kenda Karrier special trailer radial tire. The special trailer design will couple with strength of a bias tire with the durability and stability of a radial tire. And it is created specifically for trailers, so it's not intended for use on other vehicles.

Does use double steel belts and full nylon plies which combine for superior function and long life. And if you look at the tread, it has a nice computer-generated tread design and it uses premium rubber compound materials to give you superior traction in wet or dry conditions. The tire size, which will be stamped on the sidewall, right here, you'll see ST for special trailer 175/80R13. The R means that it is a radial tire. The section width on this tire is 6.8 inches. Overall diameter from the bottom to the top where it's inflated is 24 inches. And we mentioned this is a load range C tire, which is a six ply rated tire. Has a maximum load capacity of 1,375 pounds at 50 PSI. And one last thing I do wanna mention is most all your new trailer tires will come through with a speed rating on it and they stamp it on the sidewall, but they stamp it with a letter designation. So right after the size we went over, you'll see two numbers for the load index and then there's a letter M. Speed rating M will mean this has an 81 mile per hour speed rating. And this whole assembly does meet the DOT Department of Transportation specifications. But that's gonna do it for the review on this Kenda Karrier ST175/80R13 radial trailer tire in the load range C mounted on this 13 inch black mesh aluminum wheel.
