Video Transcript for Yakima JetStream Crossbars Roof Rack Installation - 2022 Ford Maverick

Hi, everyone. Aiden here with Etrailer. Today, we're gonna be taking a look at and showing you how to install this Yakima JetStream roof rack system on our 2022 Ford Maverick. Now the JetStream crossbar is gonna be the main piece of our roof rack. That's the part that goes across the roof and serves as the attachment point for all of our accessories. Now this is an arrow bar, thicker in the front and tapering off towards the back with a T-track channel in the top if you take off your end caps.

The T-track up top will be for any sort of channel-mounted accessories. Just slide it in through this weather strip and to your place that you wanna mount it. It's nice because the weather strip is one solid piece, and it doesn't require trimming, but for the most part, people are probably gonna be doing clamp around accessories, which work great with this type of crossbar because you get a nice wide platform to mount it onto. It's not super thick, so you shouldn't need any adapters. And for most rooftop accessories out there, it's gonna work right out of the box.

The Ford Maverick has a naked roof, and what that means is that there's no pre-existing rails or crossbars on top. So we're gonna need a fit kit to make this work, and the kit does come with that. That's basically gonna be a set of rubber pads that fit around this lift on the side of the roof and custom length clamps that will actually go inside of the door jamb to secure the roof rack to the roof. Now every vehicle is going to have a different length clamp and set of pads, but these are the ones that work for our Maverick, and it gets a really strong hold on the roof. The pads fit excellent around here, and Yakima's roof racks have a ton of different adjustment points to make sure that everything is angled the proper way to ensure a strong fit on the roof, which I like a lot.

The install process sometimes gets a little bit of flack from people down here in the shop because it is more involved, but I do think it results in a better fit. The crossbars themselves are 60 inches long, which gives you plenty of room to mount up accessories and does have a little bit of overhang. Depending on the accessories you wanted to carry, you could even shift these crossbars offset a little ways if you wanted to maybe use something like a load assist kayak carrier, which would require a bit of overhang to make that work. And if that wasn't quite enough to make it work for your specific accessory, you could always pick up longer bars. Yakima's bars have a track underneath that runs the entire length, so you can pick up those longer bars and trust that it will work with your existing system.

Now, as far as some other measurements go, because these clamps and pads are custom fit for a certain spot from the Maverick, we can't move this around and the spread between the crossbars is going to be pretty fixed. And for us today, that's gonna be 33 inches. So for any sort of rooftop accessories, we need to note our crossbar spread. Depending on what we're putting up here, it'll work with a certain range of crossbar spreads. I'd say 33 inches is a really solid place to be, and it should work for most rooftop bike racks, boxes, cargo baskets, things like that. A roof rack will also add height to our vehicle. From the tallest point of the roof in the middle to the tallest point of the crossbar, it's gonna be four inches. And from that same point on the roof to the underside of the crossbar is three inches. So three inches of space underneath is plenty of room for any sort of clamp around accessories we might have. And then four inches added to the top isn't too bad. It sits well below our antenna here. So if we're just rocking the roof rack, we shouldn't have to worry about things like our garage or drive-throughs, parking garages, things like that. You will need to be mindful of it as we add other accessories on top of it, especially things like a box because that adds a lot of height to our vehicle, but the rack alone isn't too bad. It does support a weight capacity of 165 pounds. That's for the roof rack, not necessarily the roof on your Maverick. Be sure to check and make sure that you're not overloading the roof's weight capacity because oftentimes it is rated somewhat lower than the rack itself, but with all that in mind, just make sure you're not overloading it and haul things safely. And overall, I think a roof rack is a really helpful tool to have. The Maverick is obviously a smaller truck, and it does have its limitations. If you're looking to carry things like lumber, maybe some kayaks, or a ski and snowboard carrier or a box to get some extra space, a roof is a great place to put that, and I think with a truck like this, you see that we have a ladder rack on the back already, it can work really well in conjunction with something like that. If we're hauling two by fours and we have really long extended loads, then we can have it supported from the bed all the way up through the cab. But even with just the roof rack, I think it's gonna be a great way to carry things like kayaks and other longer equipment for those fun weekends out on the lake or at the trails. But the installation process is one of the places where I think this really shines. The Yakima roof racks, like I mentioned before, can be a little bit more involved, but on the Maverick, it's actually really straightforward. So we'll walk you through that whole process right now. Now a couple things before you start your install. The instructions are gonna have a lot of measurements in them because these Yakima roof racks have many points of adjustment. So be sure that you grab the instructions out of the base pad fit pit here. That's going to have all the measurements that pertain to your vehicle or in our case, our Ford Maverick today. And then the instructions will tell you where those measurements and those codes all apply. We'll walk you through the process too for the rear crossbar. Our front one's already installed, but just make sure you make note of all those different measurements. We're gonna start off with our feet. We're gonna pop the covers off just by squeezing the end and pulling it out. And then from the box that our crossbars come in, grab our adapter blocks, snap those into place on the top. You'll hear a small snap with that. And then the T-slot blocks. Pop that in the top middle, flip it upside down, and use the included tool to start threading that in. There's gonna be a small door right here where you can get that tool in, and don't fully tighten this down yet, just enough so it's just about level with these plastic blocks here. Now if that bolt underneath isn't exposed, you can see there's a small door right there. Yours might have just come undone or not, but if it's not available to see, just pull that clip back until you hear a click, and that will expose the bolt. We can then take our foot with that block in place and slide it into the underside of our crossbar, taking the end cap off, and getting that slid in on both sides, making sure that the block seats within that track well. Now if it doesn't want to go at first, you might have it misaligned, but it also just might be that you tightened it up too much. So you can loosen it up to get it to slide in a little bit easier if need be. And then when you're done, pop the end cap back on. Now it's gonna be really hard to see, but on the underside of the track, there's going to be markings with numbers. That's your measurement strip. Again, here in the shop it's probably really hard to see with the light, but that's going to be one of our first measurements we take. Your instructions will have an M1 and an M3 measurement. That's for the front and rear crossbar. So just get the base of your foot lined up with the appropriate measurement for your vehicle, and start to tighten it down in place using that first bolt that we used, but don't fully tighten it yet, just enough to keep it still. Once everything's in place, we need to set our pitch and our toe. Those are gonna be two more of the codes in your instructions labeled P1 and P2, and then T1 and T2. Those P codes are gonna be a letter A, B, or C and correspond to one of the dashes on the underside of your foot. And then same thing with the T code. That's gonna be a one, two, or three and correspond with its own set of dashes. So that P code is going to refer to the pitch of the tower. You can kind of see it moving back and forth right now. For our Maverick today, ours is B for both the front and the rear crossbar, which is nice and easy 'cause that just means it's centered up. We'll just fully tighten it down until our tool clicks. (tool clicks) And then for T, that's going to be this second bolt on the outside here. And if you loosen that up, that's gonna be for how our foot is oriented this way. Now, you'll wanna leave everything loose, but for us, we can just tighten it right down where it sits because it comes in the number two position, and that's just where we want to keep it. We can then take our base pads and clip them into the feet with the arrow on the bottom facing out. If the arrow's a little hard to see, you can just look for this notched cutout. That's gonna face towards the outside as well. With all this assembled, we can put it onto our roof now. Your kit in your instructions are gonna have another few measurements, M2 and M4. The M2 measurement is from the front end of your windshield to the first point where your clamp is gonna touch. And the M4 measurement is from the first crossbar to the second crossbar. Now I've gone ahead and since our first one's installed, measured it out, and put a piece of painter tape here as a way to mark out that spot, so I know where to set this. I've done it on both sides to also make sure that this is running parallel to our first crossbar, but I'll set this up in place, get the lip of our base clip here, and our base pad matching up with the roof here. And then we can open up our door and start installing our clamps on both sides. Now it's not quite flush with that ridge, but once we start tightening that clamp, it will pull it. So for now, what we're gonna do is push this first clip closed that we did at the very beginning and open up this second one here. And if you use painter tape, just pop that off and set it to the side. We can then take our clip and actually slide this in. There's a small slot under here where we can slide it in, and this bolt here will hook around it. And we'll notice that it's kind of sprung into place right now. There's two bolts we need to worry about tightening, the one where that clip is and the one up here a little bit higher. We're gonna start tightening that higher one first, and you'll notice that the clip starts to go down flat and sit against the side of the roof. Now as you're doing these, make sure you do them evenly on both sides. I've got the other one started first just a little bit here, and once it starts making contact, we can move to our other bolt, which will draw the clip up. Our goal here is to get the clip to sit as flush with the roof and that door jamb as possible. As we jump back and forth between tightening the two different sides, you'll get to a point where your tool will eventually start to click. That's when we know it's torqued down properly. We wanna make sure that that upper bolt is torqued down first on both sides. So once we hear that click, we'll know that that one's good to go. (tool clicks) And then I've already done the other side. We can do the same thing for this lower bolt for our clips, again, going back and forth evenly until they start to get properly torqued down. (tool clicks) And once you hear that click, you can close this plastic door here and pop our end caps back on. When the clips are in place, the door can close and the end cap will just hook in starting at the bottom and snap in at the top. If you chose to pick up optional lock cores, you could lock 'em up at this time, but right out of the box, they don't include them. So at that point, you're good to go. I'd like to give it a good shake test first just to make sure that nothing's shifting around either front to back or side to side. And we're good. So we're ready to hit the road. And that'll do it for our look at and installation of the Yakima JetStream roof rack system and seeing how it installs on our 2022 Ford Maverick. Thanks for watching.

Works well, after getting them in place. On my Kia Sorrento it's very tricky to get the towers to fit the holes in the factory rails -- takes a lot of loosening and readjusting the bars.

  • Will Rhino-Rack Crossbars Fit On Yakima BaseLine Towers?
The top channel on most crossbars like the Rhino-Rack and Yakima are similar but you should never mix and match towers and crossbars between different manufacturers. Their components are designed to work specifically with each other and your Yakima towers may not work properly with the Rhino-Rack crossbars. Instead you will want to stay with the Yakima crossbars from the list below to ensure they fit together properly and you have a manufacturer who will stand behind the warranty for the...

Since your 2019 Honda Passport has raised rails the roof rack feet that fit it are the ones that wrap around the bars whereas the flush bar roof styles are the ones that have options that attach directly to it. So for a Yakima there is the Jetstream part number # Y00429 and # Y33TR which is an aero shaped bar setup that wraps around your raised rails. This is a very solid setup that will work great and is no less reliable than any other option.
