Video Transcript for Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness Installation - 2021 Honda Passport

Hey everybody, Ryan here at etrailer. Today on our 2021 Honda Passport, we're gonna be taking a look at and showing you how to install the CURT 7-way vehicle wiring harness. People use these Passports to do a little bit of everything, which does include some relatively heavy towing. You know it makes sense, the hitches available for them are very capable and these are really capable SUV. So people get out on the road a lot pulling around some heavy trailers. And those larger trailers are generally gonna have the 7-way round type connector.

And this is gonna allow you to hook up to that trailer. That way, all your lights work and everything else. You also get your reverse light circuit and your 12 volt auxiliary power as well. So you kinda get everything you need there. And if you ever need to, say maybe pull a smaller trailer or one that has a 4-way flat connector, not a big deal, you can always just grab an adapter like this, which will allow you to plug into the 7-way and then that'll convert it into 4-way flat.

That way, you can still tow the smaller trailers if you ever need to. So at the end of the day, it's just nice to know that your Passport is not gonna be limited to towing only certain types of trailers. With this wiring, you're gonna be able to pull those larger ones and plug into them. And if you ever need to pull a smaller ones, you can always use one of those types of adapters and that'll allow you to do that here as well. A great all around kit that's gonna get the job done.

Now as far as the installation goes, really not too bad. For the most part, it's plug and play, but you do have to take some things apart to route the wires and actually get everything plugged in. So it will take you a little bit of time, but really shouldn't give you a lot of issues. Speaking of which, let's go ahead and do that together now. To begin our install, we're gonna be here at the back of our Passport.

And what we're gonna need to do is locate some factory connectors, which will be inside. And so we'll open up our hatch. And what we're gonna need to do is remove some of our floor coverings. So let's go ahead and grab everything off the floor that we can. We'll just slip the stuff off to the side for the time being. This one we can probably just fold up. That way, we don't have to deal with trying to get that completely removed. So to get these trays out, we're gonna have a couple of latches here. We can just rotate them quarter turn, and we should be able to just lift up on this and move it out of the way. Now, we can go ahead and get the spare out of the way. So we'll rotate this T-handle till it comes out. Eventually we'll get there, here, pull those out and grab the spare and get this out of the way as well. And we might as well get this out of the way too, this foam compartment with tools in there. And so this locked off and we'll be able to remove it. Now on the corner here, towards the back of the vehicle, we're gonna have a push pin type fastener. We need to remove that. You can use a trim panel tool or a flat-head screwdriver to pop that out. We'll be set up the exact same way on the other side, so I went ahead and removed that one as well. So with those removed, you should be able to grab up on our carpeting and kinda work it out from our vehicle and get this out of the way as well. Just over here on the driver's side, we're gonna have a couple of fasteners that we need to remove. If you look at our cargo hook here, we can flip that up. Then there'll be a cover, plastic cover, and you can kinda get a pick or a flat-head screwdriver behind there and pry it up. And what that's going to expose is a Phillips head screw. Now the screws in there are really tight, so you can take the screwdriver and try to turn it, and you might get lucky. If chances are good, you'll probably strip it. But kind of an old trick here, every screwdriver is gonna be a little bit different, but a lot of them will have like the, have a bolt almost right there, or sometimes the handles will allow you to put a wrench, a box wrench over the top of it. And that's a case with this one. So what this is gonna allow you to do is put downward pressure on that screwdriver and turn that wrench, and that's gonna help you break it free. And while you have some extra leverage and by pushing down on it while you're turning that wrench, you're not gonna have to worry about stripping it out. So it's just kind of an old trick there, if you're having trouble with this. We'll go ahead and remove this and set it aside for now. If we continue to move up this pillar here, we're gonna have one more fastener. So again, behind this cover, just release it. There's gonna be an eight millimeter bolt. So this one we'll grab our socket, and get this removed. Now we go ahead and remove our threshold. So with this, you just pull straight up on it. Get this out of the way. And over here towards the middle, we'll see this plastic teal here. We're going to release it as well. So take a trim tool or a flat-head screwdriver and get these pop out. These are pretty brittle. So make sure you're holding them good before you start trying to go pull off on them. And that way you don't break them. It's like this and this, get out of the way for now too. Now, if we take this panel here around the driver's side, we can pop this thing free. Take a trim tool or something similar, gonna work behind it and just kinda work our way down. It's gonna release some fasteners. And we should be able to look back in here and locate our connector plug. So the plug that we're looking for is up a little bit further. Can't pull our panel out because we have this connector. We'll disconnect that, you push down on the center tab, pull it out. Now we can kinda work this up and out of the way, and you can see we're gonna have this exposed connector, right there. That's the one that we're gonna be working with. And the one that we're gonna use to plug in our new harness. So this is a grommet here that we're gonna use throughout our wiring from the outside to the inside of our vehicle. What you want to do is push on grommet and you wanna push it down towards the floor, like so. And now what we're gonna do is go from the bottom up. So we'll get underneath our vehicle and start to get our wiring routed. Now underneath our vehicle, and here's our grommet, push out of the way. We're gonna use that hole, we're gonna take our new harness, and feed that up into the inside of our vehicle. So we'll just carefully work everything in. So now that we ever wiring in here, we can peel back our panel there, take the connector plug, and plug this on in. At this point, we can grab the included 20 amp fuse, get that plugged into the holder, close up that dust cover. And I wanna mention this connector here, in our case, we're not using it. But if you had to disconnect the backup sensor harness, you're gonna wanna reconnect it to this here. That'll allow it to still function. But in our case, we don't need to do that. So that's what this is for. Chances are pretty good, you're not gonna have to, but in case you do, this is why this is here. Now we can take the white wire here with the pre-attached ring terminal. This is gonna need to get grounded to the body of our vehicle. We have a thick metal bracket right here. That'll work perfectly. We're gonna take this self-tapping screw, get through there, take our drill and you just secure this to that bracket. This point, we'll grab the two-sided sticky tape, and this is what we're gonna use to secure our converter box here, peel off both ends and make sure that the surfaces are nice and clean. And this is gonna be a little tricky to see while I'm doing this, but it's gonna get on a nice flat surface. Now behind here, and push down on it, make sure it's solid. That way, we can ensure we have proper adhesion. Now we need to do is trim our grommet. That way, it'll fit around our new wiring and still we have to go back in place. So I'm just gonna cut a slit in it with pair of snips here. And when you're doing this, just be careful not to cut those factory wires. And you don't wanna create any issues there. So you wanna be deliberate, pay attention to what you're doing. Cut that opening there, kinda work this back down. And once you have it, tuck back in there like that. It actually sealed up pretty nice, but be on the safe side, kit comes with some silicone. You can open that up. And we'll just put some sealer on this as well. Just kinda jam some of that in there. Now back underneath the vehicle, I went ahead and mounted up our 7-way connector to this bracket. This bracket does not come included. And in order to get this done, you will need a bracket to mount this up. So in our case, I just use a 7-way bracket because our hitch actually has a spot to mount that to. If your hitch does not have any bracket at all, you're gonna need a no-drill bracket as well as the 7-way bracket. So I definitely urge you to check this out because you're not gonna have a way to mount up your plug and you're not gonna be able to use it. So with that said, we're gonna take our 7-way connector there on the terminal side, and we're gonna apply some dielectric grease. This'll help keep it protected from corrosion and wear and tear. And then it's simply just gonna plug right into our 7-way, like so. And then with our wiring, what I'll do is go ahead and secure this. I'll come back and show you how it works. So we got this wiring secured, pretty straight forward, just run it along through here. And I used a peek lamp, secured it to this brace. That way, our wiring doesn't drop down, just run it right over our hitch where it plugs into our 7-way connector. Now we need to pop the hood and install some fuses. So lift the hood up, here on the driver's side, we're gonna have this fuse box, push on the three tabs, pop that up out of the way. This opening there, we're gonna take this 30 amp fuse, push that in. The opening right next to it, we're gonna take this 20 amp fuse and get this one installed. They're pretty small, they're kinda tricky. And then this one right here to the left of that 10 amp fuse, we're gonna take the 20 amp fuse and we'll get that in as well. And all these fuses are included. So you don't have to worry about them separately. Well, we have these hooked up. We're gonna put this back on. Now, we'll go ahead and test everything to make sure it's working. So now to test everything, I went ahead and plugged in this tester. And I strongly recommend using one of these as opposed to just plugging into a trailer because if your trailer has any faults, you could potentially think it's the wiring causing an issue, and this tester will bypass that. But that said, as something I have my key turned on. I have my 12 volt auxiliary power lit up. We'll try out our brakes. Our left turn, our right turn, our tail lights. And I'll start up the car, put it in reverse and make sure there's work as well. Now that we know everything works, what we can do is put all of our panels and everything back together, the opposite way that we removed them. And that'll finish up our look at and our installation of the CURT 7-way vehicle wiring harness on our 2021 Honda Passport..

Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 7-Way Trailer Connector - CU86FR

Average Customer Rating:  4.5 out of 5 stars   (73 Customer Reviews)

Quickly and easily install a 7-way, RV-style trailer connector on your vehicle with this custom harness. Connector plugs directly into existing tow connector on your truck - no cutting, splicing or tapping required.

I never knew wiring a trailer connector could be so easy! This harness is plug and play, and the installation video is invaluable, as the written instructions are, shall I say, kinda tough to follow (the tiny pictures can't compare to the video). Worth every penny!

Very good product. Fitting the trailer end through the grommet hole in the floor of the vehicle was an experience by itself. For the other end, I had to loosen the side panel to get to the vehicle side connector as Honda tried to hide it from reach. Also "Large Philips screwdriver" in the instruction manual means a #3 Philips screw driver don't try with anything smaller as you will strip the screw head.

2021 Honda Passport

4.5 Stars. This wire harness kit gives you everything you need except one thing. It was easy to install and gives you just enough length to go from point A to B. I only wish it came with some rubber insulated Cable Camps to mount the wire harness to the undercarriage.

The harness plugged in as it should and works nicely, hidden from view.

Worked out great except for the adapter had to get creative but it also worked out. Nice wiring kit plug and play

by:

I have not install this yet, but it looks sturdy and came with good instructions.

by:

Not what I asked for! I wanted the wiring harness that plugs into the break lights, not one that has to have a run all the way to the fuse panel and battery.

I know that this harness may not have been what you were looking for installation wise however for this 2018 Honda Pilot, any harness would have a connector that would run from the front of the vehicle to the rear.

The install video was very helpful. The people at etrailer where also very helpful. When the trailer showed up it was missing the trailer wiring that was to come with it. One call and a second one was shipped, no question asked. The 30 Amp fuse was missing. But I had one in my stock of fuses, so not really an issue. Thank you.

Stopped working after a few months.

Quick shipment, packaged nicely with the hitch I also purchased. Includes everything to connect a 7-pin trailer harness to my new Passport.

First of all I want to thank Brittany W for her help. the curt T-connector wiring harness fit my car easy to install the only thing i did not know. There is a blue wire with a connector were does it go.

Per instructions the grommet it is supposed to pass through is NOT big enough. I had to cut the wires and splice them after feeding it into the cargo area. For the price I paid for this kit there should be no modifications required.

The USCAR connector will fit through the oval grommet if turned sideways according to the installation instructions.

The wiring harness is excellent. Installation was not too complicated for a do it yourself install. Instructions/pictures were clear and understandable. We are very happy with the result and performance of the trailer wiring harness ordered from etrailer. This wiring harness along with a new Hitch receiver was mounted on a 2021 Honda Pilot.
Overall great product and service. We would buy again.

by:

I received the wiring harness in just a couple of days. When I went to install it I discovered that there was one already in the vehicle. The dealer had told me there wasn't one. etrailer followed right up with me to do a return. Great service! I've used them in the past for other camper related items.

Thumbs up!

by:

Shipping is always a problem, ordered on the 8th and paid two day shipping didnt end getting until late on the 12th. I called customer service and they said that it went out after the truck on the 8th and my order was placed at 10:30 am. I would try and work on getting stuff out as promised by your shipping options.

Perfect fit!

by:

Very high quality harness. Difficult to get the plug through the oval grommet hole - would be a lot easier if the harness was sent without the plug attached.

by:

Superior quality materials and workmanship on the actual hitch, BUT I am surprised a 7-pin trailer connector will not fit the flange on this hitch!!!

by:

Everything that was provided by etrailer was excellent. The only thing that needs improvement is the installation instructions. [video] filled in the bad spots so the installation went well. Alex was great to work with.

by:

This was easy to install, but a few pages of the directions were missing. That was not a big deal as the website had the complete PDF file. The Curt brand has a tradeoff between the T-one. The T-one requires you to assemble the plug, but came with a grommet installed. The Curt had the plug installed, but you had to cut the existing grommet and re-seal.

by:

Everything worked fine but the connector to the trailer hitch needed new holes drilled.

by:

Plugged into the wire harness exactly like it was supposed to.

  • Best Hitch for a 2020 Honda Passport
We do in fact have hitches for the 2020 Honda Passport. I recommend the Curt Class III, part # C13421. It has a gross tongue weight capacity of 750 pounds and a maximum towing capacity of 5000 pounds (which increases to 6000 pounds if you use a weight distribution system). It's a 2" receiver. I've linked to a video installation of this hitch on a 2020 Passport. If you're looking to tow a travel trailer, you'll need wiring for your Passport as well. I recommend the Curt T-Connector, part...

  • Comparing Curt and Tekonsha 7-way Connector Wiring Harness For 2021 Honda Pilot
You are correct that for your 2021 Honda Pilot there are two 7-way connector options for you, the Curt # CU86FR and Tekonsha # 118286. Between these two options I recommend going with the Tekonsha # 118286 as in our experiences the Tekonsha harnesses hold up better over time and tend to be more reliable. This harness plugs into a factory connector behind the driver side trim panel in the rear cargo area of your Pilot making it a very easy connector to get installed. If you do not already...

According to my contact in the Tech Support department at Curt, a diode in the Curt 56421 harness which we sell as # CU86FR has shorted out which allows voltage to feed back into the trailer with the vehicle off. This is typically caused by a short circuit somewhere in the trailer wiring or by a dirty or corroded 7-way connector on the trailer. If the connector is showing green or white corrosion on the sockets, there's a good chance the corrosion has spread inside the connector which can...

  • 7-Way Trailer Wiring Harness and Brake Controller Recommendation for 2021 Honda Passport
A taillight converter combines 3 circuits, left turn signal, right turn signal and brake lamps into two circuits. Once installed, you'll have two circuits; left turn combined with brake lamp and right turn combined with brake lamp. This is necessary because the trailer uses a 2 wire system instead of the 3 wire system used on the tow vehicle. I'd recommend the Tekonsha # 118291. The Passport is prewired for a brake controller so installation will be a plug and play proposition. For a fairly...

Thanks for reaching out, Robert! The best way to add a plug-and-play style 4-Way/7-Way connector to your 2023 Honda Passport is with the following parts: - Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness # CU86FR - 7- and 4-Pole Trailer Connector Socket # HM40975 - No-Drill Mount Bracket, Long # 18136 The Curt wiring kit is a plug-and-play style where the only "splicing" you have to do is ground the white wire to a clean bare metal spot on your frame with the included self-tapping screw....

You'd have to basically start taking apart the cargo area panels till you find the floor and look for a grommet in the bottom of it to pass the 4-way through. • Is Curt Echo Trailer Brake Controller Compatible With Curt 7-Way Wiring on a 2018 Honda Pilot?
Yes, the Curt Echo Wireless Brake Controller # C51180 will work when connected to the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness # CU86FR on your 2018 Honda Pilot. This controller uses the input from the brake lights going to the trailer to send power from the charge line circuit on the 7-Way to the brakes. • Recommended Hitch for a 2024 Honda Passport
Yes, I would be happy to! To add a hitch to your 2024 Honda Passport, I recommend the etrailer item # e44AR. This hitch is custom fit and bolts to your Honda with included hardware. This is a class III hitch with a 2" receiver. It has a 5,000 lbs towing capacity and a 750 lbs maximum tongue weight. I really like the etrailer hitch item # e44AR because the crosstube mounts behind your rear bumper cover leaving only the 2" receiver visible. This not only looks better but helps with ground...

  • Trailer Hitch For 2020 Honda Passport With Best Finish
The Curt # C13421 and etrailer brand # e44AR Class III hitches have the most durable finish and would be a fit for your 2020 Passport. The only difference between the two is the sheen on the finish. The Curt uses a glossy powder coat finish, the etrailer uses a matte finish. I personally prefer the matte finish, as it tends to blend in with the underside of the vehicle a little better. Keep in mind, that even though the hitches use a quality powder coat finish, the hitch will occupy a...

  • Do Both Connectors On the Curt T-Connector for a 2019 Honda Passport Need Plugged In
In regards to the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness part # CU86FR, there are two white connectors. The larger rectangular connector contains the trailer lighting circuits and the smaller square connector contains the reverse sensor wire. If you don't have reverse sensors then you won't have to plug this into anything. I think that is what you are asking but if not take a look at the installation instructions which are attached below.
